You may remark something like, “It seems like you’re most concerned about the side effects of therapy.” “Does it sound correct?” Using nonverbal communication to communicate support when speaking in person, such as a worried facial expression, may be a very effective method of conveying your sentiments. The use of comments such as “I’m sorry you’re in so much pain right now,” or “You’re in such a difficult circumstance” may also be used to communicate kindness and affirmation.

Ask how you can support them and resist jumping in to problem-solve.

During my work as a therapist, I assist patients in communicating their needs for emotional support to friends and family members. You can’t be expected to be able to read people’s minds and predict what would provide comfort to them in every occasion. It indicates a want to assist without assuming to know what is best for them when you acknowledge this and ask, “How can I support you?” or “What can I do to help?”

Check in to see if they are suicidal.

Emotional anguish may be terrible at times, especially for those who do not have access to enough support and resources. Suicidal thoughts might arise as a result of this situation. It is not necessary for someone who is going through a difficult moment to lie to oneself or make up fairy tales. Their best course of action is to confront reality full on and realize that, no matter how awful things are today, they will not remain that way always. Alternatively, and despite the fact that it may not appear to be much consolation, there is a degree of comfort in knowing that, as terrible as things are, they might be far worse. Concentrate on the positive aspects of life because, like fear, things for which to be thankful are just as real as things for which to be grateful.

Recognize that the good is just as genuine as the terrible and that both are equally valid.

In the words of Robert Schuller, “Tough times seldom last, but tough people do.” “Things won’t always be this awful,” and “we’ll make it through this, don’t worry,” are phrases that have been repeated a million times, yet they are true in this situation. Spread the word about these things to your family and friends, and be sincere in your statements (since you know they are true!). If you’re going through a tough moment, you’ll be shocked at how reassuring words may have an unexpectedly beneficial influence, even in the face of adversity.

“Don’t Give Up.”

It’s entirely normal to be afraid of what you don’t understand or understand well. In this situation, the idea is not to allow yourself to lose control or panic to the point that your emotions take over and rule your life rather than your reasonable thinking. After all, you’re still breathing. It is hoped that you are in excellent health, that your family is well nourished, and that you have a roof over your head. While these may all seem like “what’s the big deal?” moments, consider how many people throughout the world have never had such comforts.

Be grateful for what you have and for the positive things that have come into your life. You’d be surprised at how a simple gesture of thankfulness may provide you with a sense of calm that you’ve never experienced before.
