How to Escape a Group Text on Android
It is not possible to quit a group text without first asking to be removed from it on an Android smartphone, however you may opt to silence notifications.
The following instructions are for using the stock messaging app on Android devices, which you can get here. When leaving a group text on your Android phone, the process may change depending on the messaging software you are using, such as Messages on the Samsung phone or Google Messages.
- Navigate to the text of the group

You will not be able to read any further messages in the group text unless you return to the group text and hit the bell again to acknowledge their receipt. Leave a Group Text on an iPhone
On an iPhone, you have a couple choices for blocking off annoying group messages, which you can learn about here.
Option 1: Mute Notifications
On iOS, the first option is to silence group text alerts by selecting the following:
- Navigate to the group text that you wish to silence
- Select the group of contacts at the top of the screen by tapping it. Click on theInformationbutton (it’s under the group) to get more information. To enable it, go to the bottom of the page and press theHide Alertstoggle
Hide Alerts (or Do Not Disturb on iOS 11 or before) prevents you from receiving a notice (and the associated text sound) every time someone in the group text sends a new message. Open the group text to see all of the new messages that have been added to the thread. Distractions are reduced as a result of this strategy.
Option 2: Leave a Group Text on iOS
However, even if you’re using the Messages app on your iPhone, this is not always an option when you want to truly end the chat. To send a group text message on iOS, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:
- Rather than a conventional group text message, you must be participating in an iMessage chat. The ability to leave a group text through Messages will not be available if some of the participants in the group chat use Android phones or other applications rather than Messages on iOS
- There must be at least four persons in order for the option to leave a group text to be available. Because, if you were to quit a three-person chat, it would no longer be a group text, but rather a simple text between two individuals, goes the reasoning behind the rule. In any event, if you’re in a three-person iMessage conversation, the option to Leave this Conversation is disabled
If you are able to send a group text message on iOS, please follow these steps:
- Open the iMessage group you wish to quit and select Leave Group
- Select the group at the top of the screen, followed by theInformationbutton. Scroll down and select “Leave this Conversation” from the drop-down menu. You may confirm your selection by tappingLeave this Conversation.

Can’t Leave a Group Chat on Your iPhone? Here’s What You Can Do Instead
It is possible that your iPhone will not allow you to exit group discussions in the Messages app. We’ll explain why this is the case and demonstrate what you should do instead. Group chats are extremely useful because they allow you to hold various discussions with several individuals at the same time and they allow you to easily carry the topic forward. You may, on the other hand, find yourself wishing to quit a group conversation in Messages but being unable to do so for whatever reason. Here are some of the reasons why you won’t be able to exit group conversations on your iPhone—and what you may do to get around them.
Why Can’t I Leave a Group Chat in Apple Messages?
There are two types of group chats in Apple Messages: an iMessage group, in which everyone in the group is an Apple user, and an SMS/MMS group, which can contain a mix of Apple and non-Apple users. An iMessage group is the most common type of group chat. In order to distinguish between the two, an iMessage group features blue speech bubbles, whilst an SMS/MMS group has green speech bubbles. You’ll be in an SMS/MMS group as long as there is at least one non-Apple user in the group, regardless of whether the rest of the group is comprised entirely of Apple users.
When everyone in an iMessage group is an Apple user, you can only exit group chats when everyone is an Apple user.
The likelihood is that one or more people are not utilizing an Apple device with an iMessage feature activated if you’re unable to leave the site.
How to Leave a Group Chat on Your iPhone
As previously stated, you will only be able to exit a group chat if everyone is using an Apple device and if there are at least three persons who will be remaining on the thread when you leave. For those who wish to depart:
- Activate the group chat
- At the top of the thread, click on the group symbol or the group name to join the group. Click on the Info I icon. Scroll down and select “Leave this Conversation” from the drop-down menu.
What to Do If You Can’t Leave a Group Chat
If you are a member of an SMS/MMS group, you will not be able to leave. You may, however, still get rid of the background noise by just muting the entire group. To accomplish this, follow these steps:
- Activate the group chat
- At the top of the thread, click on the group symbol or the group name to join the group. Click on the Info I icon. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and turn on the Hide Alerts switch.
Swipe left over the group message and hit theAlertsbutton or the bell icon in purple, or swipe right over the group message.
To signify that the group chat has been muted, a crescent icon will show next to the group chat. To reverse this, slide the screen again and press the Alerts button once again.
Prevent Notification Burnout
Maintaining a sense of belonging is a basic human requirement. However, back-and-forth chit-chat about rubbish or issues in which you aren’t very interested might be irritating. It’s possible that you require some alone and a few uninterrupted hours away from distractions and noises. It may be necessary to turn down the volume of group conversations or perhaps leave them completely in order to gain some much-needed peace and quiet. How To Remove Someone from a Text Message Group on the iPhone
With iMessage, it is more simpler than you may expect to remove someone from a text messaging group on your iPhone. The ability to remove someone from future interactions isn’t impossible if you’re sending out an iMessage group message and they’re no longer a member of the group. This guide will lead you through the steps of removing people, adding users, muting groups, and dealing with trolls in your group, among other things.
Remove Someone From Text Message Group In iMessage
In some cases, being joined to a group that is highly active might be a nuisance. Whatever your reasons for want to remove someone from a text messaging group, doing so on the iPhone is simple, albeit a bit difficult to find due to the buttons’ placement. Be mindful of the fact that all members of the group conversation need to be using iMessage (blue chat bubbles); this will not function with standard SMS or MMS group conversations (green chat bubbles).
In addition, you must have at least three additional persons in the group chat (for a total of four people) in order for the Remove option to show. You will not be able to see the ‘Remove’ option if you do any of the following:
- It appears that there are less than three people in your group message. a contact is using SMS messaging – Even an iPhone may be utilizing SMS messaging and still look blue, which means you will not be able to use the ‘Remove’ option
- Someone is running an operating system other than Apple’s
Assuming all prerequisites are met, the following is the procedure for removing someone from a group iMessage conversation:
- From within your iMessage app, navigate to the group chat in question. To access the iMessage group, choose the cluster of icons at the top of the screen. To view the list of group members, click on the I that appears to the right of the screen. When the name of the person you want to delete shows on the left, swipe left on it and press ‘Remove’ when it comes on the right. For more information on why you may not be able to swipe to display the ‘Remove’ option, check the disclaimer above. When the pop-up window displays, selectRemove
As a result, that member is instantly removed from your messaging group. The only alternative you’ll have if you don’t have the choice to “Remove” is to create a new thread without the undesirable contact. Your phone will retain the conversation history, but they will not get any new messages as long as you send your texts to the new group rather than the old one.
Removing Yourself From a Group iMessage
There is an opportunity to withdraw oneself from an iMessage group if all of the conditions given above are satisfied, and this option is available. If you are accidentally added to a group that you do not want to be a part of, take these steps:
- The group iMessage should be opened just as before, with the tiny I under each profile photo selected. Tap on ‘Leave this chat.’ at the bottom of the information page after scrolling down.
If you don’t see this option, it’s possible that someone in the group isn’t using iMessage or that the group is too small to satisfy the requirements we specified above.
Adding Someone to a Group iMessage
Fortunately, if you forget to add a contact, you may do it at a later time. The same, admittedly bizarre conditions as earlier apply, which means that if there is an SMS user in the group, you will not be able to pull this off successfully. Open the information page in the same manner as we did earlier, and then select the option ‘+ Add Contact.’ Select the contact and add them to the group in the same way you would normally do.
Mute A Conversation In iMessage
It’s possible to turn off the notifications if you’re not ready to quit the chat but still want to take a break. This protects you from having to deal with a conflict and saves you time.
- Open the group chat app on your iPhone and press the circle of profile images at the top of the window to join the conversation. The I option will appear when the list of group members is displayed
- Tap it to see a list of group members. At the bottom of the group window, clickHide Alerts to turn them off.
This will prevent any chat alerts from being sent to your phone, allowing you to essentially ignore them.
Block the Contact
If you’ve exhausted all other alternatives, consider blocking a particular contact. If you are unable to quit a group that you did not request to be a member of (for example, a spammer), your sole choice is to block members of the group. You can also prevent messages from being sent by a specific user inside a group.
- Open the group chat on your iPhone and type something in it. Afterwards, click on the contact group link at the very top of the website. To view the list of group members, click on the blue I for Information symbol in the top right corner. Choose the person you wish to prevent from communicating with you
- SelectBlock this caller from contacting you
- Return to the Group window and click the Done button.
This final step is critical since iMessage will not always block the user unless you confirm the block in the group window before proceeding. If this is the route you’re compelled to pursue, we’ve included a comprehensive lesson on how to proceed.

Depending on whether you were the one who started the group chat and whether others are reacting to the troll, you may need to remove yourself from the group chat and then create a new message group that excludes the troll from it. If you then send a message to the group explaining why you’ve created a new messaging group, users will be able to mute or remove themselves from the previous group, allowing them to continue the more respectful discourse in the new group. Any advice for avoiding trolls in text messaging groups, social media platforms, and online forums would be appreciated.
How To Gracefully Exit A Really Annoying Group Chat
Beth Sacca was in charge of the photography. We’ve all been subjected to a grating group chat at some point. You’re familiar with the type: When an innocent and well-meaning individual initiates a group text with all of her pals for planning purposes, such as a birthday dinner, she does it with the best of intentions. There is discussion about logistics, and users double click one other’s messages in order to bestow heart and thumbs up replies on them. That is, until someone abuses the conversation by posting a meme.
- Before you know it, you’ve received 74 SMS, the vast majority of which contain the word “haha.” But, fortunately, you are not required to stay a part of the conversation.
- Scroll down to “Leave this conversation” in the Details section, which will prohibit you from being able to post or receive messages in the chat room going forward.
- kai: What exactly is betrayal?
- — is the nekoma incorrect?
- You will, however, be able to view previous messages if you choose to preserve them for future reference.
- There must be a minimum of four persons present.
The act of departing may draw attention, so if you’re going to do it, you may as well prelude your departure with an explanation or a meme like this one: However, there’s nothing quite like the power move of sending a text in a group chat (for example, pictures of a prospective date’s Tinder profile), receiving no answers, and then quitting the group without saying anything.
A Hide Alerts button is located directly above the “Leave this discussion” button.
You will still appear as a member of the group chat and still receive text messages, but you will not be alerted of them in this manner.
What’s the best part? Nobody will be able to tell that you have silenced them. A tool that I encourage using on Twitter and Instagram as well as in real life (and that I wish could be used in real life more often).
How to Politely Exit (or Tune Out) an Overly Active Group Text – FTC
The “chatty group text” has become a common occurrence among smartphone users who routinely connect through text message. And it’s usually the case that everything starts out innocently. Perhaps it’s a group of parents from a local kids league meeting to discuss when the next practice will be held, or perhaps it’s a large bunch of former classmates getting together to arrange the big impending reunion. However, regardless of the allegiance of the group’s members or the original topic of discussion, the discourse eventually veers off course – and veers off course dramatically.
For those whose data plan charges per-text prices, the sheer volume of chatty group text is enough to become tedious and even plain maddening (not to mention expensive) depending on the topic being discussed (and who could be in the group).
The deluge of new massages and the incessant buzzing/pinging that comes with it, however, are not something that consumers who find themselves in this circumstance must just bear.
- Reduce the level of noise — Users can turn off notifications for just the group text thread, while still receiving notifications for other (less annoying and potentially more important) messages. This will put an end to what is arguably the most annoying aspect of the overly chatty group text — the seemingly nonstop phone buzzing or pinging — but they will still receive notifications for other (less annoying and possibly more important) messages. iPhone users may silence the chat by going into the group text and selecting “Hide Alerts,” while Android users can mute the conversation by entering into the conversation, selecting “Group Details” from the menu, and switching off the notification settings.
- Simply leaving the organization is sufficient
- No explanation is required — Users of iPhones can also leave a group conversation without saying anything — and it is safe to say that the vast majority of those who notice that a group member has left a boisterous group conversation will completely understand the reason for the departure, even if they do not hear an explanation from the group member who has left the conversation. If you’re using an iPhone, you may do so by going inside the text thread and selecting “Leave This Conversation.” While Android users are unable to opt out of a conversation, they can request that the group’s founder remove them from the group, or they can quiet the alerts for group messages by following the steps outlined above.
- Explanation for your exit —When opting out of a group text in the manner described above, some users may feel compelled to provide a reason for their departure from the group text. While this is not required by many text-etiquette experts, it can be done without hurting anyone’s feelings in the process. One option for a user to do this is to inform other group members before leaving the group that he or she is really busy and just cannot afford to be distracted by the messages at the present moment, as described above. Another alternative is to express concern about the number of messages that are taking up space on his or her device, which most smartphone users would recognize as a typical source of anxiety among smartphone owners
Keeping the inbox from becoming overloaded It’s also possible for participants of a group text to take efforts to ensure that the conversation does not ever go into “too talkative” zone in the first place. Here are some suggestions that users should follow in order to avoid getting on other people’s nerves during group discussions:
- Maintain focus
- Only speak out when absolutely required. In most cases, if a statement does not advance the discourse, it is advisable to refrain from saying it. To send a message to only one member of the group, create a separate, one-on-one message that is not sent to the whole group. Make every effort to keep ideas/talking points contained inside a single, well-thought-out text message rather than splitting one talking point up into many messages, each of which conveys just a portion of the concept Avoid texting at odd hours of the day, especially late at night or early in the morning when other group members may be asleep. (Also keep in mind that other members of the group may be in different time zones.) Avoid adding new members to a group without first confirming with the group’s founder that the addition is OK. Think about how much data other users could have available to them, and be extra careful not to transmit needlessly huge photos that can consume too much of their data quota. As a general rule, if you’re engaging in a group text chat, try to be extremely respectful of all of the members of the group.

How to leave a group text on iMessage
- Open the group text in which you wish to leave a message
- Select the name of the group text by tapping it. Click on the “Info” button. Scroll down to the bottom and choose Leave this Conversation
Of course, this will only function if every participant in the group chat is using the iMessage app on their mobile device. The group will not allow you to quit if even one of its members utilizes MMS/SMS, such as someone who uses an Android device. Other times, it may not be advisable to quit the group chat, but you may not want to deal with your iPhone continually pinging at the same time. It is possible to make both of these situations a little more palatable by turning off the group chat alerts.
Muting the alerts allows you to enter and browse the conversation at any time, but there will be no sound or banner notifications while you are doing so. The Hide Alerts button, which is denoted by a purple outline

How to Exit iPhone Group Message
In certain cases, keeping track of group chats might be difficult, especially when dealing with the continual alerts from everyone involved in the conversation. Even while there isn’t a method to totally opt out of all group texts on your iPhone, there is a workaround for getting rid of some of those annoying discussions you don’t want to be a part of any more.
Disable Group Messages
In the iPhone’s Settings app, go to the “Messages” section and select it. You can turn off group messaging by scrolling down until you find the “Group Messaging” toggle, and then tapping it. You have now deactivated all group messaging for all members of your group. In the Messages app, choose the conversation you want to remove and swipe left on it to delete it. You will no longer receive messages from that group after doing so. Unfortunately, this approach to prevent group messaging only works with text messages and does not work with iMessages or other instant messaging apps.
If you ever want to receive group messages again, all you have to do is go back to the Messages category in the Settings app and turn on Group Messaging once more.
