How to Report a Spam Text: 4 Simple Steps

When it comes to communication, texting is the most convenient technique. Spammers, like those who use any other method of sending and receiving messages, have figured out how to take advantage of this. If you’ve received a spam text message, you’re not alone in feeling that frustration. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) expects to receive around 14,000 SMS spam complaints in 2020. To effectively stop this bothersome – and unlawful – practice, it is important that you understand how to report spam SMS.

Typical instances include the following:

  • Advertising in mass quantities
  • Dubious “special deals”
  • Notifications indicating you have won a contest in which you did not participate
  • Messages from the Internal Revenue Service or other government agencies
  • Emails or text messages that appear to be from a bank or credit card company, requesting that you confirm information

The good news is that there are straightforward actions you may take to put a stop to the problem. The steps outlined in this step-by-step instruction will teach you how to report unwanted texts so that your SMS inbox remains clear and free of trash messages.

1. Forward the Unwanted Messages to 7726 (“SPAM”)

A number established by the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA) for reporting spam SMS is 7726 (which is an abbreviation of the word SPAM). The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA), which includes hundreds of service providers from all over the world, is a member of the majority of major carriers in the United States. In order to report a spam message, forward it to 7726; this will never be counted against your plan if you don’t have unlimited texting available.

While the exact procedure for Android users varies depending on the hardware and SMS app used, you’ll typically need to hold down the message while selecting the “Forward” option. After then, your message will show as a new text. Fill out the contact form with the number 7726 and click “Send.” What occurs next is determined by your service provider:

  • Verizon will send you a text message in which they will seek the sender’s phone number. You’ll receive a confirmation message after responding
  • AT Twon does not automatically seek further information, but it does give a site online where you may provide additional information, such as the sender’s number, the time you got the message, and what the message stated. True, this is an additional step, but it aids AT T in its efforts to combat spam SMS. T-Mobile will give you a confirmation SMS, after which the communication will be forwarded to its security department for further investigation. The Sprint system will give you an automated message in which the sender’s phone number is requested.

2. Report Unwanted Texts to the FTC and FCC

To file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over fraudulent text texts, go to theirComplaint Assistantpage. Select “Phone, internet, TV service,” then “Cellular or landline phone service” from the drop-down menu after clicking “Report Now.” It will guide you through a brief quiz regarding the message, including the number that sent it and other pertinent information. You may also quickly file a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission about unsolicited text messages (FCC).

3. Add Your Number to the Do Not Call Registry

By registering with the Federal Trade Commission’s Do Not Call Registry, you may avoid receiving unsolicited text messages and phone calls. You may register your phone number for free and in a matter of minutes by following these simple steps. To register your phone, follow the link and then pick “Register Your Phone.” After your phone number has been registered for 31 days, you can file a complaint about harassing calls and messages.

This method is more helpful for spam calls, but it isn’t a bad idea if you want to reduce the number of unwanted messages you receive as well.

How to stop spam texts: 8 do’s and don’ts

As a result of the many aggressive marketing strategies used by advertisers, our inboxes are frequently flooded with unsolicited messages. In the worst-case situation, others offer fake links to deceive individuals into disclosing their personal information, which may lead to identity theft, credit card misuse, and a variety of other problems. You must be aware of the best practices for protecting oneself from spam and how to report any instances of it. Hopefully, this post has supplied you with all of the information you want in order to report spam to several service providers.

Is there a certain sort of spam message you get?

Leave a comment below to tell us about your own personal experiences.

1. Don’t reply directly to any spam text message

The fact that you responded directly to a spam text message informs the spammer that your number is legitimate.

What happens after that? In certain cases, they may even sell your phone number to other spammers, who may then use it to pest you with offers of free gifts and products.

2. Do treat your personal information like it’s cash

Text messages sent to you by spammers may entice you to provide sensitive information such as how much money you make, how much money you owe the bank, your Social Security number, and credit card information. The majority of legal businesses do not ask for personal information such as passwords, account information, or other sensitive details over text messages. When in doubt, check for the company’s phone number and contact them to determine whether or not a valid request has been submitted.

3. Don’t click on any links in the text message

It is possible to put malware on your phone by clicking on a link in a spam text message. Malware can collect information from your phone. It has the potential to direct you to fake websites that appear legitimate but are meant to steal your information. Malware can also cause your mobile phone’s performance to suffer by taking up valuable memory space on your phone’s hard drive. Once the spammer has obtained your personal information, it may be sold to marketers or, in the worst case scenario, to identity thieves.

If you receive a text message regardless of whether you requested it, your cellular provider may charge you for the text message.

4. Do review your cell phone bill regularly

It’s a good idea to check your phone bill on a frequent basis to ensure that it accurately represents the charges. If you see any costs that don’t appear to be correct, contact your phone carrier to determine whether you are getting or sending spam messages from your phone.

5. Do check your phone’s settings

Your phone is likely equipped with built-in capabilities that can assist you in blocking unwanted calls and text messages. Using the search feature on your smartphone, look for the word “block.” The three dots in the top right-hand corner of your text are where you should look for them on Android phones. Select “People” and “Options” from the drop-down menu. Next, choose “Block” to stop getting spam text messages from that number. Click on the I in the upper right-hand corner of the spam text to view it on an iPhone.

6. Do place your cell phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry

Do you want to know how to stop spam phone calls? By registering your phone number with the Federal Trade Commission’s National Do Not Call Registry, you may opt out of receiving most telemarketing calls in the future. If you get an unwelcome call after your phone number has been on the registry for 31 days, you can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

7. Do check to see if your carrier offers a call-blocking service

In order to block phone numbers from unknown callers for a particular length of time, most major carriers provide call-blocking services or plans that allow you to do so. You may also check to see whether any of the third-party call-blocking applications or services will function with the wireless service provided by your carrier.

How to Block and Report Spam Calls and Text Messages (Published 2018)

Telemarketers have been a thorn in the side of humanity for many years now, and with good reason. Moreover, although technology provides more alternatives for preventing unwanted calls, it also allows spammers to be more adaptable than they have ever been. Here’s what to do if you receive a spam call or text message, as well as how to avoid receiving them in the future. If you haven’t already noticed, fraudsters have become more sophisticated. Many people these days use computers to “spoof” the phone number they appear to be calling from, which allows them to call from hundreds upon thousands of different phone numbers at the same time to conceal their identity.

Because of this, they are notoriously difficult to block, but there are a few things you may try.

Block and Report Individual Numbers

Before we get started, let’s clarify that there is a distinction between spammers and fraudsters. You may occasionally receive unwelcome calls and messages from a firm with whom you have done business or from a charity to which you have given. If you believe the call is coming from a reputable source, you have the right to request to be removed from the list. Good firms will (ideally) comply with your objectives in the long run. Those that scam you, on the other hand, do not adhere to the rules; they are often dishonest individuals attempting to take your money.

  • Make no calls from their automated menu, do not respond to any text messages with the word “STOP,” and do not even speak to them.
  • To prevent more calls or texts of this sort from coming from a firm that refuses to remove you from its list or from a full-on fraudster that you can’t get rid of, you may block the number and file a complaint with the appropriate authorities.
  • Open your recent calls list on a phone running “vanilla” Android (such as Google’s Pixel line), press on the number in question, and select Block/Report Spam from the drop-down menu.
  • While the iPhone does not yet have a spam reporting option, you may prohibit a certain number from contacting you again by setting a block on that number.
  • To block a caller, press the I button and then scroll down to Block this Caller on the next screen.
  • iOS 12 will be released this fall, and it will be available for download.
  • The majority of carriers engage in a program that will utilize this information to attempt to prevent subsequent spammers from being sent to their customers.

In this case, Google and your carrier will both get the communication, allowing Google to strengthen their spam prevention algorithms as a result.) When blue-bubble iMessages are received, iPhone users may report them as spam by clicking on the Report Junk link that appears underneath messages from unknown people.

None of these measures, however, is a guarantee that the calls will cease.

Scammers are becoming more sophisticated, and they may just call from a different phone number — but this method will aid the Federal Trade Commission, Google, and mobile carriers in their efforts to address the problem in the long term.

Filter Spam Calls in Bulk

By reporting the call or text, you are helping to combat the evil of telemarketers and spammers. Thank you for your assistance. When it comes to spam calls, you may take your call-blocking to the next level if you’re still receiving a slew of them. Google’s built-in spam filtering may be turned on and off by Android users using the Phone app. Select Settings from the three dots in the upper-right corner, then Caller IDSpam from the drop-down menu. Enable the option to filter calls that appear to be spam.

Although the iPhone does not have a built-in option to filter these calls, both Android and iPhone users may filter spammers and fraudsters at the carrier level as an alternative.

  • The Caller Name ID app is available for download from the Verizon App Store, and users may subscribe to the service for $2.99 per month, as well as enable the spam filter option from inside the app. Customers of AT T may turn on the AT T Call Protect function, which will automatically block fraudulent calls and alert you if you are receiving calls from suspected fraudsters. A companion app allows you to keep track of such calls as well as give other functions. Reverse-number searches and better caller ID are available as part of the “Plus” edition of the service, which costs $3.99 per month and automatically alerts T-Mobile customers when suspected fraudsters contact. However, you may also use an optional account feature known as Scam Block, which stops scammers from ever reaching through to your phone number. Sprint offers a $2.99 per month service called Premium Caller ID, which attempts to detect numbers that aren’t in your address book and alerts you if it believes a spam call is being placed on your phone. Although it can automatically reject incoming calls, it cannot do so.

Third-party programs that include enormous databases of spam numbers, as well as several alternatives for blocking them, are also available in large numbers. Hiya(free) andRobokiller($2.49 per month) are two of the most popular. In reality, several of the carrier services mentioned above have formed partnerships with Hiya and Robokiller in order to make advantage of their respective database systems. The primary distinction is in how they block calls: Third-party programs can stop your phone from ringing, but your carrier may block the call earlier in the chain, sending the spammers a busy signal that will hopefully make them think your number is disconnected.

Finally, if all of this seems like too much trouble, there is one more alternative available to you.

  • On Android, go to Settings > Sound > Do Not Disturb Preferences > Priority Only Allows and choose that option. For calls and texts, you may select Only From Contacts from this menu. Then, from the top of the phone, slide the notification shade down to reveal your Quick Settings, where you can turn on Do Not Disturb with Priority Only set to Priority Only. Any calls from numbers that are not in your contacts list will be sent to voice mail. When using a Samsung phone, the process is a little more straightforward: Start by opening the Phone app and going to Call Settings, followed by the Block Number and Block Unknown Callers options).
  • It is possible to accomplish this on the iPhone by navigating to Settings, selecting Do Not Disturb, Allow Calls From, and then selecting All Contacts. Then, returning to the Do Not Disturb screen, select the Do Not Disturb option.

As a result, this option is really enticing because it ensures that your phone will not ring for any spammers or fraudsters. If you don’t have the caller’s number in your address book, some valid calls will be blocked as well — but voice mail will always be available to catch such folks, and you may call them back as soon as possible. Do Not Disturb is the only option available because to the large amount of potential spam numbers; yet, due to number spoofing, blocking them one at a time is very hard to accomplish.

Furthermore, the Federal Trade Commission has supported a number of programs to intelligently forecast and prevent robocalls, which should give a ray of light for the future – but none of these initiatives is a panacea just yet.

Although the plague of spam calls is unlikely to be lifted very soon, you may at least do something about it by employing the following strategies.

Getting more spam text messages? How to avoid and report the latest schemes

If you’re receiving odd messages from “AT T” inviting you to claim a free perkor “FedEx” with notifications for an unfinished delivery, you might be tempted to click on the link for further information. However, this is not recommended. Please don’t do that. These mails may appear to be genuine, especially if you have service with the provider that appears to be sending you messages. However, before you get too enthusiastic about your “prize,” there are a few red flags to look out for throughout the process.

Scammers are stealing your information when you click on a link in a text message that has a trustworthy firm name, a trusted URL, and an urgent deadline.

However, this does not contain the workaround used by spammers to send text messages.

It’s terrifying to consider the possibility of mistakenly clicking on the link or answering “STOP” (which you should be careful doing). One erroneous step might be all it takes for crooks to obtain your information. But don’t be concerned. In this section, we’ll tell you what you can do right now to help keep your personal information safe. Currently playing: Keep an eye out for this: Robocalls from bogus phone numbers have reached unprecedented levels.

First, never open the link

Scammers are tough to deal with. When you open the message, it will look like it came from a reputable firm, such as your cellular service provider, bank or medical institution, and it will contain a link that will prompt you to verify your account details. The link then directs you to a website that appears to be legitimate but is actually a scam. Its purpose is to store your login and password as well as other personal information for future reference. In the event that you receive an unexpected communication that contains a link, do not click on it.

As reported by How To Geek, this bogusVerizonSite was being utilized in phishing efforts, and you can see it in action here.

Do research before replying with STOP

In order to opt out of getting non-nefarious spam messages (such as those from that restaurant giving the free milkshake), one typical approach is to reply to the message with the word “STOP.” From political campaigns to your internet service provider, it may be a quick and simple method to put an end to communications sent to you by any source. Scammers, on the other hand, utilize the same method to fool you into responding to their messages, in turn letting them know that your phone number is real and one that they may target with more messages or robocalls.

I, for example, checked Comcast’s phone number by Googling for “text from 266278” after receiving a message a few weeks ago asking whether I wanted to be notified if there was an outage in my neighborhood.

If you verify that a phone number is authentic, respond with the word STOP to have your name removed from their mailing list.

Report a bad message to your carrier

If you are unable to determine who gave you a message or if the communication appears to be a hoax, you can forward it to 7726 (which is the number that letters “spam” on a phone’s keypad). This number is accepted by AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon, all of which accept spam reports. After reporting a message, you may receive a follow-up message asking for further information or for confirmation of the phone number from which the initial message was received. Some carriers, like as Sprint, may even prevent the number from contacting you in the future once you have reported it to them.

Use your phone’s built-in blocking tool

One additional method is to put a stop to the phone number yourself. Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems have built-in features for blocking texts and calls from certain numbers. You can always choose to have the number blocked. Photographs courtesy of Jason Cipriani/CNET

iPhone users

Open the message in the Messages app on your aniPhone and tap on the profile photo at the top of the screen, followed by the Infobutton. After that, touch on the phone number, followed byBlock this Caller, which will be located at or near the bottom of the screen. Following those procedures will prevent the phone number from sending you messages or phoning you. When it comes to spam, Google Messages will go the additional mile to evaluate and detect it. Photographs courtesy of Jason Cipriani/CNET Users of iOS devices may also filter out unknown senders in order to automatically sort through a large number of unknown numbers by turning on theFilter Unknown Sendersfeature in their Messages settings.

Android users

As is frequently the case with Android phones, the procedure for blocking a number will differ based on the manufacturer of your phone and the messaging program you’re using to do it. For those using Google’s Messaging application, begin by opening the spam message and then touching on the menu button at the top-right corner of the screen, then selectingDetails from the list of choices. To proceed, selectBlockreport spam followed byOK on the subsequent page. The Messages app will give the number, as well as the past 10 messages sent from it, to Google for study in order to enhance spam detection in the future.

If you’d like to just block the number, uncheck the box next to “Report spam” before pressing the “OK” button.

If you are regularly irritated, you should submit a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission. Angela Lang is a contributor to CNET.

There are a few programs available that can help you restrict the amount of spam text messages you get. TextKilleris a software powered by Robokiller that uses Smart Blocking to automatically filter out texts that might be deemed spam. Robokiller is a spam detection and prevention service. The software is now compatible with Apple Watches, which will aid in the filtering of spam messages. Also available are the ability to add phone numbers and keywords that you would like to be blocked.

File an FCC complaint to help stop spam texts

If you live in the United States and wish to contribute to the fight against present and future spam communications, you may submit a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission if you get a message that fits into one of the following categories:

  • A marketing text message that was not requested
  • It is an automatic message that is sent to your phone without your permission. Without your approval, an automated message from a telecommunications company or another firm advertising the products or services of a telecommunications company will be delivered to you.

To make a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission, go to this website. It won’t immediately stop SMS from appearing on your phone, but it will at the very least assist the FCC in tracking down criminals who are abusing the system. You will not have to deal with robocalls in the same way that you will not have to deal with spam mails. You won’t be able to completely eliminate them, but you can reduce the amount of times your phone rings as a result of them. Remember, there are several red signals to look out for when it comes to coronavirus scams, so make sure you are aware of all of them.
